Celebrating the Pursuit of Happiness: Reflecting on What Truly Makes Us Happy.

On March 20, we celebrate International Day of Happiness.This global event was created by the United Nations and nonprofit partner Action for Happiness to remind us all that being happy is a human right and worth celebrating. The goal is to spread awareness of human happiness and well-being and to reflect on what truly makes you happy, and how to pursue this daily.

GRATITUDE:

One of the simplest paths to happiness is gratitude. Simply taking a moment each day to acknowledge the “wins” in life, whether they are big or small. This can help to shift our focus from what we lack, to what we have. Gratitude has the power to foster a sense of appreciation, allowing for a positive outlook to help lift spirits.

 

CONNECTION AND RELATIONSHIPS:

Our relationships with others play a pivotal role in our own happiness. Whether it is spending quality time with loved ones, creating new connections, or engaging in acts of kindness (think love languages). By sharing laughter, tears, smiles and experiences, we can nurture and enhance our connections with other individuals and bring joy to our relationships.

 

PURPOSE AND MEANING:

Having purpose and meaning in our lives is fundamental to our overall happiness. This can be found through exploring passions and pursuing these on a daily basis, making a positive impact on the lives of others close to us, or by aligning our actions to our own beliefs and values. Purpose assists with direction in our lives, fuelling our motivation. Reflecting on what your passions are and how this can then translate into daily living and practices can assist with our own pursuit of happiness.

 

MINDFULNESS AND SELF-CARE:

With the whirlwind of day-to-day, it is so important to take time out to be in the moment with our thoughts and actions. Mindfulness explores the awareness of our thoughts, actions, feelings and surrounding environment through a nurturing lens.There are a range of apps and online content to assist with self-directed mindfulness. My personal favourite being the Smiling Minds app. Self-care is also extremely important and allows individuals to set aside time during their day, week or month to partake in or complete an activity that is going to bring joy and peace.

 

EMBRACING IMPERFECTION:

This notion of “perfect” and striving for greatness can often lead to frustration and dissatisfaction. Imperfections are common! By embracing these imperfections, we are able to accept our flaws. This in turn allows for a reduction in the burden of unrealistic expectations. It is ok to stumble and make mistakes along the way. These mistakes are the stepping stones for growth, reflection and change.
